Day 15 - Teach a man to fish

Struggled to pre-book accommodation in Yamba so instead opted for a dodgy little caravan Park about 15 kms out in a small town called McLean. Lovely little fishing village on a  river.

On the way we pulled over for Quiddy‘s second driving lesson. Found a deserted, sealed road that ended in a dead-end. It was a public road with hills and corners. Quiddy was amazing.  He drove the van faultlessly, changing gears from first through  to third several times bringing the van to a full stop and taking off again without stalling. He drove in total for about 20 minutes the full length of this road and then back to the main road. Very very proud of him.

Once in McLean we checked into the van park and then drove the 15 minutes into Yamba. Quiddy and I decided to do a spot of fishing. And if you remember from a few posts ago I talked about teaching a man to fish being better than giving a man a fish. Well it was Quiddy that taught me how to fish today. His catch count was three to my pathetic one and even my one was caught on his rod by accident.  Quiddy got the hang of baiting his own hook with the slippery little prawns. I have never professed to be much of a fisherman, in fact I can honestly say I don’t really know the first thing about it, only having been once or twice myself. But between us we managed to figure it out and caught four whopping, big, massive ( forgot there were photos) all right so they were tiny little fish but we caught them nonetheless.  I have a mate called Jock who is following the blog and used to be a marine biologist whilst working on a kibbutz back in the 80’s.  Jock will be able to identify the species we caught. All were returned to the ocean unharmed (one did need a bit of resuscitation). NO FISH WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING IF THIS BLOG.

This area is apparently famous for prawns so we went to the local Fishermans Co op and got ourselves some fresh local prawns, peeled them and have just finished off a delicious meal of prawn and Balmain bug sandwiches.

Getting very excited to see the girls.  Only one more sleep and then we meet them at the airport in Ballina.
